One of the questions I often receive is, “How do I choose a payroll company?”

As a seasoned nutrition group practice owner, it is fair to say I have used ‘most’ of the payroll companies available with mixed experiences.

My Experiences with Different Payroll Companies

Square

I used Square for about two years. They were pretty basic and relatively inexpensive compared to other options. However, the interface was difficult to navigate, and I could never find the time clock for my employees. The dashboard was frustrating and hard to navigate, which was a significant downside.

SurePayroll

I used SurePayroll for one year. They were the opposite of Square—too many features that I didn’t need. I felt they were constantly trying to upsell me on unnecessary upgrades. Their customer service was poor, often leaving me more confused after calls. Price-wise, they were comparable to Square.

ADP and Paychex

ADP and Paychex are suitable for large corporations but not ideal for small businesses like mine. They were overly aggressive with sales tactics, bombarding me with calls and emails even after I discontinued their services. Additionally, they were much more expensive than Square and SurePayroll.

Gusto

Currently, I am using Gusto.

They are about 30% more expensive than SurePayroll and Square, but I find their interface easier to understand. However, setting up my account was challenging and took longer than expected to run the first payroll. A major plus is that I can easily pay international contractors through Gusto. Overall, my experience with them is a B+.

Their customer service is solid and accessible.

The Hiring Dietitian’s Ranking the Payroll Services

Based on my experience as a nutrition group practice owner, here’s my ranking of the payroll services:

  1. Gusto
  2. Square
  3. SurePayroll
  4. ADP
  5. Paychex

Conclusion

In summary, there are several Payroll companies you can choose from as a nutrition group practice owner. Personally, I feel like Gusto meets all of my current needs; I can easily pay employees, and both domestic and international independent contractors. I feel like the ‘extra’ cost compared to other payroll companies is substantiated for the features and ease of use. If you are new to running payroll (Welcome!) I would highly suggest starting with Gusto.
