One of the questions I often receive is, “How do I hire out-of-state dietitians?”
As a seasoned nutrition group practice owner, it is fair to say I have experience in hiring dietitians from various states. This guide aims to provide you with practical tips and insights on hiring out-of-state dietitians effectively.

Benefits of Hiring Out-of-State Dietitians
Hiring dietitians from other states can bring several advantages to your nutrition group practice:
- Diverse Talent Pool: Potential access to a broader range of skills and expertise.
- Flexibility: Ability to offer services in multiple time zones.
- Remote Work Capabilities: Leverage the benefits of remote working to enhance productivity and reduce overhead costs.
Steps to Hiring Out-of-State Dietitians
1. Understand Licensing and Certification Requirements
Before hiring a dietitian from another state, ensure they meet the licensing requirements in both their state and your state. Licensing requirements can vary, so it’s crucial to verify that the dietitian holds the necessary credentials to practice legally. If you are bringing the new hire onto your insurance contract make sure you are actually able to do this.
Some insurance contracts state specifically that the dietitian needs to be located in the state where the contract originates.
An example of this would be both the BCBS of IL and Washington state’s BCBS product. These two contracts state that the provider needs to be located in the respective state (Illinois and Washington)
In addition, if you are in a state like Connecticut we have a requirement for certification. Therefore, if you were bringing the out of state dietitian onto your CT based insurance-based group the insurance companies would require the new hire also be certified in CT.
2. Develop a Comprehensive Job Description
Create a detailed job description that outlines the responsibilities, qualifications, and expectations for the position. Clearly state that the position is open to candidates from other states and highlight any specific requirements related to remote work. I know everyone wants to work remotely but make sure you are crystal clear of the exact nature of the job.
3. Utilize Remote Interviewing Tools
Use video conferencing tools to conduct interviews with out-of-state candidates. This allows you to assess their communication skills, professionalism, and suitability for remote work.
I would also recommend a phone screen in addition to the formal interview. I provide detailed instructions on the entire recruiting process in my hiring course.

4. Consider Time Zone Differences
When hiring out-of-state dietitians, consider the time zone differences and how they might affect scheduling and communication. Ensure that your practice can accommodate these differences effectively. Communication with patients is also critical.
It is important that the employee ‘shows’ up at the right ‘time.’ This might be something practice owners take for granted when all the employees are physically located within the same time zone.
5. Provide Remote Training and Onboarding
Develop a robust remote training and onboarding process to ensure that new hires can integrate seamlessly into your practice. Provide them with the necessary tools and resources to succeed in a remote working environment.
I go REALLY deep into the onboarding process in my hiring course. Your ability to onboard effectively will make or break the success of the new candidate. I can’t stress the importance of an organized, intentional onboarding process.
6. Establish Clear Communication Channels
Set up clear communication channels and regular check-ins to maintain strong connections with your out-of-state dietitians. Use project management tools and collaborative platforms to keep everyone on the same page.
On my team, we use Asana for all of our employees. And while it can get expensive it helps standardize the employee experience.
I am a super fan.
Challenges and Solutions
Challenge: Regulatory Differences
Solution: Stay informed about the regulatory requirements in different states and ensure compliance with all applicable laws. This is a BIGGIE. You may need to hire an attorney to help with this process.
Challenge: Communication Barriers
Solution: Implement effective communication strategies and tools to bridge the gap and maintain smooth interactions. Tools like Asana, Monday, Slack or Upclick can help keep everyone on the same page.
Challenge: Building Team Cohesion
Solution: Foster a sense of community through virtual team-building activities and regular meetings to strengthen team bonds. You will need to be super INTENTIONAL with one. You will need to be creative with networking and team building events when not everyone is located in the same state.
Conclusion
Hiring out-of-state dietitians can significantly enhance your nutrition group practice by bringing in diverse talent and expertise. By following these steps and addressing potential challenges, you can successfully integrate out-of-state dietitians into your team and expand your practice’s reach.
